EPILEPSY MONITORING UNITS
The Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group is proud to have three Level 4 (highest level granted by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers-NAEC) Epilepsy Units in our New York and New Jersey hospitals. Level 4 epilepsy centers “provide the more complex level of intensive neurodiagnostic monitoring, as well as more extensive medical, neuropsychological and psychosocial treatment. They also offer a complete evaluation for epilepsy surgery, including intracranial electrodes and a broad range of surgical procedures for epilepsy.”
Our hospital epilepsy units are for Video-EEG monitoring and higher-level testing. Our three Level 4 epilepsy centers are fully prepared to conduct epilepsy surgeries as well as implantation of devices used to control epilepsy (e.g. vagal nerve stimulators, Neuropace®, etc.).
Our epilepsy program in Atlantic Health System (Summit, NJ) is also equipped with the only magnetoencephalogram (MEG) in the northern east coast. The MEG is a machine similar to the EEG but instead of detecting electrical fields, it captures magnetic fields of the brain. The MEG is an especially exciting new tool available to epilepsy specialists in that it can capture activity originating in deep structures of the brain directly because it is not affected by obstacles (skin or bone).
