Becoming a Patient

Finding an epilepsy program and healthcare team that works with you to achieve your needs and goals regarding seizure management and freedom is key in the epilepsy journey of patients and their families. At Epilepsy America, we endeavor to make the process of becoming a patient with us as seamless and timely as possible.

WHAT TO EXPECT

When you call our offices during normal business hours Monday-Friday, you can expect to speak with one of our team members about the reason for your call and your health insurance information. With this information the team member can move forward with your appointment with one of our epileptologists or other appropriate healthcare professionals within our network.

HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE

Our physicians accept a wide variety of insurance plans. When you call our office, one of our team members will inquire with you about your insurance policy and will check to determine if your insurance plan coverage is one with which we participate. Once your benefits have been confirmed, our staff will work with you to set up your first appointment. In some instances we may not participate with your insurance plan. In that case, you would need to explore your out-of-network benefits and you would pay out-of-pocket for your appointments.

SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT

We strive to make sure that our patients are scheduled as soon as possible which means days or a few weeks from the time the first call comes in.

SECOND OPINIONS

When it comes to your health, a second and even third opinion may be needed to make sure you’re your treatment is on the right path. Some of the circumstances in which a second opinion is sought out include:
• Someone’s condition is complex and requires a more specialized medical doctor
• The diagnosis is unclear
• The patient is showing no improvement
• There is a need of more comprehensive services (e.g., memory treatment program, medical diet, surgical evaluation)
• The patient is looking for better communication with the doctor and better results

INTERNATIONAL PATIENTS

Patients from different regions in the USA and from abroad contact our offices seeking expert care from Epilepsy America. Our aim is to make state-of-the-art epilepsy diagnosis and treatment available for these patients so we work hard to ensure that testing and treatment processes are streamlined and scheduled as quickly as possible. We are proud to have doctors and support staff who are fluent in several different languages including Spanish and other languages.

MEDICAL RECORDS

We ask that patients send us their medical records prior to their first appointment. This can be done by requesting records from doctors’ offices that can be faxed or mailed to our offices. Patients may also upload scanned documents through the patient portal.
